BIOP Graduate School announces new PhD programs

In June 2005, BIOP Graduate School recieved a five-year extension grant from the Danish Research Agency. The Danish Research Agency awarded 6 mill. DKR (grant no. 646-05-0064) for the period 2005-2010.

The majority of the school activities will be co-financing PhD-projects. The Graduate School Board has decided to initiate ten PhD-projects over the next three years in the following rate:

Fall 2005: Closed Deadline Closed
Spring 2006: Closed Deadline Closed
Fall 2006: Closed Deadline Closed
Spring 2007: Closed Deadline Closed
Fall 2007: Closed Deadline Closed
2008: Last remaining projects Deadline Open for submissions (from September 2008)

Important notes: Deadlines are decided by the BIOP Graduate School Board and they are announced at this web site. Number of available projects at each call subject to change.

Call 2008 (remaining projects)

Applications for co-financing are accepted continuously. Usually decisions on applications are taken on the regular BIOP Graduate School board meetings. However, decisions can be made on continuous basis by the Board.

Apply for co-financing

Please read the guideline for applying before submitting the application. The entire application must be submitted electronically and it is strongly advised that you have all necessary documents readily available electronically.

On-line BIOP Graduate School application forms

Applications regarding various funding schemes are available for on-line applications. It is the intention that all applications and communication regarding applications and grants are carried out via the Internet and electronic mail.

Apply for funding

The BIOP Graduate School encourages everybody, who works in the field of biomedical optics, to apply for funding for various projects. You may apply for funding for

Visiting scientists and students

An important activity at the BIOP Graduate School is exchange visits of scientists and students. Therefore the school is capable of sponsoring such visits, including professors, post docs, graduate and under-graduate students, for shorter or longer stays. To be eligible to receiving support from the BIOP Graduate School, the purpose of the visit should fall within the general research and educational topics of the school.

Funding is only applicable if the following requirements are met:

  • during their visit scientist shall hold relevant seminars,
  • these seminars shall be published on this website at least two weeks in advance.

General topics

  • Laser physics, laser technology and non-linear optics for biological and medical applications.
  • Ultra-sensitive optical methods for probing biological processes.
  • Inference based on mathematical processing of spatial and temporal structures.
  • Advanced data and image processing.
  • Optical sensors based on optical fibers and photonic crystal fibers for biological and medical applications.
  • Tissue optics and light propagation in tissue.
  • Optical biosensors
  • Optical excitation of biochemical processes.
  • Optical tweezers systems and their applications in biology.
  • Lasers and optical methods for applications in ophthalmology.
  • Lasers and optical methods for applications in dermatology.
  • Lasers and optical methods for applications in cardiology.

On-line support application form

The on-line support application form must be filled out by the host of the hosting institution. Please have all relevant documents at hand. Note that all documents must be submitted by using this form.

Support for salary, accommodation or travel expenses

The support may cover salary, accommodation and/or travel expenses. Financial support for hosting visiting professors taking part in teaching as well as research projects and visiting graduate and under-graduate students may be granted. The level of support is indicated below. In general, visiting professors are expected to have shorter stays, typically 1-2 weeks, while students in general have longer stays. The school encourages the hosting institution to match the grants for student visits. Supposing the school grants two-months salary expenses, the hosting institution will provide similar amount thus yielding a four-months stay with the school for the student. However, matching funding is not a strict requirement to obtain grants from the school.

The support may be salary (accommodation expenses) and/or covering travel expenses. One requirement for receiving funding for visiting professors and scientists is that public seminars relevant for the graduate school students are held, and that the seminars are published at this web site at least two weeks in advance.

Salary

Visitor category Maximum length of stay (*) Amount per month in DKR (**)
Professor 1 month 10.500,-
Associate professor (scientist) 1 month 9.500,-
Post doctoral fellow 1 month 7.500,-
Graduate student 2 months 7.000,-
Under-graduate student 2 months 7.000,-

(*) The maximum is not a strict rule, but it is the recommended maximum length visit.
(**) The rates are actual rates as of 2002. The amount is granted as salary (after taxation). Reductions may occur if the visitor receives funding for salary or accommodation from other sources.

Travel support

Travel support grants are limited to a maximum of 5.000 Danish crowns (round-trip ticket) per visitor.

The travel support grants are usually paid as reimbursement upon or immediately after arrival at the hosting institution. Applications for travel support grants can be made upon arrival. Upon arrival at the hosting institution, proper documentation for travel expenses must be submitted to the BIOP Graduate School in order to get reimbursed.
